Planned gifts can provide benefits to the donor as well as a meaningful contribution to Zoo Atlanta. We offer several types of gifts that help the donor realize tax and/or financial benefits, including:
Bequests
The most simple and direct way to make a planned gift to the Zoo is to mention Zoo Atlanta in your will. Donors may designate a sum of money, a percentage of their estate, or real estate through a will.
Life Income Vehicles
These gifts allow donors to make a gift of capital without giving up the income produced by these assets. Life income gifts can help the donor receive income for life, receive income tax benefits, reduce or eliminate estate and inheritance taxes, avoid capital gains tax, and possibly increase significantly the income from the assets. Life income vehicles include: (i) charitable lead trusts, which provide income to Zoo Atlanta for a specified number of years and then return the principal to the donor's beneficiaries, and (ii) charitable remainder trusts, which pay the donor or the donor's beneficiary an income for life or a period of years and then turns the principal over to the Zoo.
Retirement Plans, IRA and Keogh Gifts
A gift of these assets to Zoo Atlanta can eliminate estate and income taxes, provide substantial life income for a surviving spouse, and ultimately transfer a gift to the Zoo.
Using Appreciated Securities to Fund Planned Gifts
Making a charitable gift to the Zoo with highly appreciated securities can result in (i) a larger gift to the Zoo, (ii) a tax deduction to the donor equal to the full fair market value of the stock, and (iii) avoidance of capital gains taxes on the increased value of long-term securities.
Gifts of Property
Donating gifts of tangible personal property, closely held stock and real estate can reduce the capital gains taxes that would be incurred if the donor were to sell it during his or her lifetime. It is also possible to donate your personal residence or second home while retaining the right to continue to live in that home for life.
