Zoo Atlanta's Education Department plays an integral role in the zoo's mission, by raising awareness of conservation issues and providing engaging, educational and entertaining experiences as we strive to inspire people to environmental action.
Wildlife Theater Internship Objectives:
- Allow qualified individuals the opportunity to gain professional hands-on experience in animal care and training, and visitor interpretation at a world-class zoological facility.
- Promote interest in animal training and conservation education as future careers.
- Create a potential pool of qualified applicants to fill future openings in animal care and education departments at Zoo Atlanta or other zoological facilities.
- Provide support to education animal care staff.
- Enhance productivity and efficiency of education animal care teams.
Petting Zoo Internship Program Description:
Petting Zoo Interns will work with a variety of domestic animals (including goats, sheep, and pigs) in our contact yard and surrounding exhibits. Interns are supervised by education animal care staff, and will primary participate in a variety of animal care/husbandry and visitor interpretation activities. Interns will also have an opportunity to be involved with animal training and public presentations. Assignments and opportunity to participate in various animal care and training activities is based on prior experience with animals, animal care knowledge, and progress in the internship.
Interns are accepted year-round; however, it is advisable to apply as early as possible before the start of a semester or the summer season. Candidates must have a strong desire to work with animals and interact with zoo visitors, and be capable of performing vigorous physical activities.
Eligibility and Commitment:
- Internships are unpaid, last of a period of three months, and require a minimum of 16 hours per week. (schedules may be flexible based on candidate's availability)
- Candidates must have completed at least one year of a college degree program, preferably in biology, animal behavior, zoology or a related field.
- Candidates must submit a cover letter with resume and three references (two through school).
- Candidates must be able to provide proof of current negative TB test.
