Camp Activities
We try to spend as much time outside exploring the Zoo as possible; there will be indoor and outdoor activities. Please make sure your child is dressed in play clothes appropriate for the weather. Lunchtime is a quiet time for the children to relax.
A typical camp day includes:
- Zoo walk
- Classroom lessons with pictures and biofacts (bones, pelts, feathers, etc.)
- Games and activities that reinforce the concepts being taught that day (biodiversity, camouflage, etc.)
- Morning and afternoon snacks
- Lunchtime with a video (Disney, animal, educational etc.)
- Animal encounter - children will get an up-close encounter with some of our education animals
- Arts and crafts project
- Zoo attractions (petting zoo, train and carousel rides, special tours)
This is a basic list to help you understand our busy day at the zoo. Schedules will vary depending on the age group and the camp theme. Please note that the half day
for Summer Safari Camp
is not a separate camp, but instead the morning portion of the full day camp.
Concepts the children will learn every week (Summer) or each day (Winter and Spring): Conservation, Food Chains, Predator/Prey relationships, Biodiversity, Habitats, Endangered species, Adaptations, and Recycling.
Other Camp Details
Lunch: Campers MUST bring their own lunch and drink with them from home. Campers will not have access to a microwave for lunch, nor will they be able to purchase a lunch on Zoo grounds. Summer Safari Half day campers do not need to bring a lunch since their day ends before lunchtime.
Instructors: Instructors are well-trained and qualified educators who enjoy working with children and are knowledgeable about Zoo Atlanta.
Class structure
- Student/teacher ratio: Each class has one instructor to approximately 10 children. Junior volunteers (ages 14-17) assist instructors, but they are not left alone with campers or counted in the student/teacher ratio.
- Class grade ranges: We place campers in the appropriate class for their age and do not make exceptions to grade requirements. Activities and lessons are age appropriate; placing children in an incorrect age group compromises the quality of experience and disrupts the activities for the individual child and the entire class.
See specific camp page for age groups.
- Placing friends together: If your child is attending camp the same day or week as a friend, we can try to place them in the same class if they are the same age. Classes fill quickly, so we cannot guarantee friends will be placed together.
T-shirts and name buttons: We encourage campers to wear their camp shirt as many days of camp as possible. All campers receive a t-shirt and name button each camp session. Additional shirts can be purchased online at the time of reservation or by calling 404.624.WILD.
Medications: If your child requires medications throughout the day, provide it along with written instructions concerning dosage and time to an instructor during morning drop-off. Also, you must fill out the Medication Authorization section at the time of registration, granting permission for Zoo Atlanta staff to administer the medication(s).
Snack: We supply a morning and afternoon snack for the children. These are items such as: animal crackers, rice crispy treats, popsicles, pretzels, chex mix, teddy grahams, granola bars, etc. We will make exceptions for and workaround any food allergies a child may have. (i.e., peanut butter). We recommend you supply snack for your child if you are concerned about his/her allergies.
Animal Contact: Campers will have the opportunity for an up close encounter(s) with several of our education animals (chinchilla, snake, etc.). We also provide biofacts (shells, pelts, bones etc.) that the children may touch to enrich their experience. For the safety of all, direct contact with exhibit animals is not possible.

Drop-off and pick-up
Click here (PDF file) for a map with directions.
Drop-off is held at Gate C-5 in the Cherokee Avenue parking lot. Gate C5 is located along the perimeter fence on the south side of the parking lot. Look for camp signs to direct you to the drop-off location. For your child's safety follow these instructions when picking up and dropping off:
- On arriving at the gate each morning, parents will be given a card with a number and letter for identifying their children for pickup. Anyone picking up the child will be required to provide this number and letter. The number/letter corresponds with the camper's group and number in the group (e.g., 2L would be Number 2 Lovely Lions).
- At drop-off, a camp counselor will greet your child and help him/her from the car. During pick-up, give the letter/number of your child, and an instructor will bring your child to your car.
- If you need to strap small children into car seats, please pull out of line to avoid a traffic jam.
- If you need to speak to a camp supervisor or your child’s counselor, feel free to do so during the drop-off and pick-up hours. Park your car and walk up to the gate to have your discussion.
- Please be patient; for your child’s safety we need to check off each camper before he or she leaves with the designated adult.
We want your child to get the most out of his or her time at the Zoo. Therefore, activities will begin promptly at 9 a.m., and camp ends at 4 p.m. Regular morning drop-off will begin at 8:30 a.m. Campers must be picked up by 4:30 p.m. unless you have registered for extended care. If you did not pay for extended care and you drop your child off early or pick up late, you will automatically be charged the extended care fee of $10 per day. Extended care fees are non-refundable. Parents interested in the extended care option must check the section designated "extended care" on the registration form, and pay the additional fee of $10 per day. Campers will have a variety of extended care activities to choose from while they are waiting for parents to arrive.
Drop-off for extended care is 7:30 a.m. Pick-up for extended care is 5:15 p.m.
Late fees will be charged for campers picked up after 4:30 p.m. and will be assessed at the following rates:
4:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. - $10 for each incident; additional $1 per minute after 4:45 p.m.
Late fees for extended care are as follows:
5:31 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. - $10 for each incident
5:46 p.m. to 6 p.m. - additional $1 per minute
Children will be escorted to the Education building after 5:45 p.m. When you arrive, use the call box at the C-5 gate to call Security. Security will radio a camp staff member to bring your child to the gate.
Late Drop-off/ Early Pick-up
If you drop your child off late or need to pick him or her up early, please use the call box at the C-5 gate to check in with Security. An Education staff member will come to the gate to assist you. If you need to pick your child up early, you MUST give a note to your child's camp instructor that morning so that we can have your child ready when you arrive. Remember, the children tour the Zoo every day, and it will take time to bring them to you, so please be patient.
